Australia Student Visa Changes 2026

Australia Student Visa (Subclass 500) Updates for International Students

The Australian Government has introduced important changes to Student Visa (Subclass 500) applications for 2026. These changes aim to manage the growing number of international students while ensuring that visas are granted to genuine students with clear study intentions.

Key Changes for 2026

  1. Prioritised Visa Processing
The new Ministerial Direction 115 (MD115) sets out how student visa applications will be prioritised. Processing speed depends on how education providers are meeting their allocated student numbers under Australia’s National Planning Level (NPL). Offshore applications may be affected first, meaning some students may receive faster or slower processing depending on their provider.
  2. Genuine Student Requirement
The older Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test has been replaced with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Applicants must clearly demonstrate:
    • Why they chose a particular course and institution
    • How the course fits their career plans
    • That they meet all visa conditions and intend to comply with Australian visa rules
  3. Financial and Documentation Requirements
Students must provide proof of sufficient funds for tuition and living costs. Complete, accurate documentation—including a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), financial proof, and English proficiency—is critical for a smooth application.
  4. Onshore vs Offshore Applications
Some applicants may now be required to apply from offshore rather than switching visas while inside Australia. This is designed to maintain the integrity of the student visa program.

What This Means for You

  • Apply as early as possible to avoid delays
  • Prepare all documents carefully, showing genuine study intent and financial stability
  • Stay updated on your education provider’s allocation under the NPL
  • Understand that visa processing times may vary depending on provider and application timing

These changes reflect Australia’s commitment to a fair and transparent international education system, ensuring students can focus on their studies while complying with visa requirements.
